Route 404, usually referred to as Menachem Begin Expressway (or Begin Boulevard) is an urban freeway in western Jerusalem named after sixth Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Local Jerusalemites simply refer to it as `Begin` (pron. IPA `bei-gin). The road follows a north-south path that connects key neighbourhoods and commercial areas, as well as several city arteries and national routes. Begin Expressway is made of the central section, which was completed in 1998, and the northern extension to Highway 443 to Modi`in, which was completed in late 2002 and merges with Highway 1 to the Tel Aviv area. It is equipped with noise barriers in many of its sections. The road is called Jerusalem Road 4 in internal Jerusalem Municipality documentation and Road 50 in the Moriah-Jerusalem Development Corporation documentation. Part of the northern extension is marked as national Highway 45.
