This book made an essential point of departure in showing the link between children’s migration, the urban informal sector and the livelihood dynamics of rural households. In a clear and succinct style, it presents the causes, patterns and processes of rural children’s migration to Addis Ababa and shows how migration exacerbates the problem of streetism in the city. It also provides a sound foundation leading to a richer understanding of how migrants manage to earn a living in the fluid informal sector and cope with the dynamic urban street life. The study explores the type, nature and importance of informal social networks established between migrants and other segments of the urbanities. In addition, it reflects on how migrants negotiate and contest on the way of appropriating the public space and handling complicated social interactions. The book obtained much of the knowledge firsthand from children’s life experience and illustrates those ideas by adopting case stories that are characterized by an every day life perspective binding in time-space constitutive.
