Over the last decade and a half, notable authors have concluded mid-adolescents today have largely been left to their own devices to individuate into adulthood. This situation has been called many things but the effects are the same; mid-adolescents feel they are isolated and alone and adults do not understand. Research has shown that mid-adolescents in urban, suburban, and rural contexts feel the weight of systemic abandonment; however, academic insight into each of these three contexts has not been given equal weight. With the rise of the mega-church model and the explosion in past decades of suburbia, much has been written about ministry to adolescents in suburban churches. The popularity of hip hop culture has opened hearts to the possibilities of ministry in the urban centers. The growth and understanding of mid-adolescent ministry in these contexts is notable and worthy of celebration. A disparaging fact remains: little if anything is known of ministry to mid-adolescents in rural contexts. This book presents a ministry response to rural mid-adolescence that is psycho-socially current, culturally relevant, and theologically driven.
