It is a siding covered log building dating back to the years after the 1867 purchase of Alaska by the United States. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987. A National Historic Landmark (NHL) is a building, site, structure, object, or district, that is officially recognized by the United States government for its historical significance. Out of more than 80,000 places on the National Register only about 2,430 are NHLs. A National Historic Landmark District (NHLD) is a historic district that is recognized as a NHL.
