High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sackbut refers to a trombone from the Renaissance and Baroque Eras. More delicately constructed than their modern counterparts, historic trombones feature a softer, more flexible sound and they attracted a sizeable repertoire of original chamber and vocal music. The next word to appear in the 15th century that implicated a slide was the sackbut group of words. There are two theories for the sources: it is either derived from the Middle French sacquer (to push) and bouter (to pull) or from the Spanish sacar (to draw or pull) and bucha (a tube or pipe) (Herbert 2006, p. 57). The term survives in numerous English spelling variations including sacbut, sackbutte, sagbut, shagbolt, sacabushe and shakbusshe.
