It is the largest remaining mound in the Tampa Bay area, and is believed to have been the "capital city" of the Tocobaga. In 1964, it was declared a National Historic Landmark After the U.S. National Register of Historic Places program was created in 1966, the site was added to it the same year. It is sometimes referred to as the "Indian Mound."
