To the north, Haute-Savoie borders Switzerland and Lake Geneva, with Geneva as the closest major city. To the east, Haute-Savoie borders Italy, and to the west the department of Ain. To the south it borders Savoie. Some of the world's most well-known ski resorts are located in Haute-Savoie. Skiing and mountaineering are at the heart of economic activity in Chamonix, thanks to the nearby Mont Blanc, Europe's second highest mountain (4,808 meters high). Lake Annecy is another major attraction in Haute-Savoie, as is the town of Evian-les-Bains, the most famous town on the French shore of Lake Geneva, and well-known around the world for its Evian mineral water.
