Saint-Andre-sur-Orne is a commune in the department of Calvados in the Basse-Normandie region in northern France.The village was the site of an expulsion of many schoolchildren from the Maison du Clos by the Nazi army during World War II, in which case the marching children were rescued by soldiers from the USA. It takes its name from a cluster of rocks off the coast.Calvados is one of the original 83 departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from a part of the former province of Normandy. The name "Orne inferieure" was originally proposed for the department, but it was ultimately decided to call the area Calvados.
