Saliotite is a colorless to pearl white phyllosilicate mineral in the smectite group. Saliotite was discovered in 1994 at Andalusia, Spain and named after Pierre Saliot, a French geologist. It has the chemical formula Na0.5Li0.5Al3AlSi3O10(OH)5, has perfect cleavage, a pearly luster and leaves a white streak. Its crystal structure is monoclinic and it is a soft mineral with a hardness rated 2-3 on the Mohs Scale. The silicate minerals make up the largest and most important class of rock-forming minerals, constituting approximately 90 percent of the crust of the Earth. They are classified based on the structure of their silicate group. Silicate minerals all contain silicon and oxygen.Nesosilicates (from Greek nesos, island), or orthosilicates, have isolated (insular) [SiO4]4– tetrahedra that are connected only by interstitial cations.
