The Schempp-Hirth Ventus was a sailplane produced during 1980-1994 by Schempp-Hirth, a German manufacturer. <www.sailplanedirectory.com/schempp.htm> It replaced the Mini-Nimbus. It was designed by Klaus Holighaus. The company produced 613 planes. The decline in the cost of Carbon fibre allowed the wing to be produced from carbon reinforced plastic. The strength of carbon fiber wings prevented wing twists that sometimes occurred at high speeds with wings made from fiberglass. The sailplane also featured a thinner wing section. The plane had a 15 metre wingspan which complied with racing specifications. Longer tips were available which increased the span to 16.6 metres.
