High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The sclerometer, also known as the Turner-sclerometer, is an instrument used by mineralogists to measure the scratch hardness of materials. It was invented by Prof. Thomas Turner in 1896. The Turner-sclerometer test consists in measuring microscopically the width of a scratch made by a diamond under a fixed load, and drawn across the face of the specimen under fixed conditions. Thomas Turner Sc., A.R.S.M., F.R.I.C. (1861-1951) was the first Professor of Metallurgy at the University of Birmingham. The University was created in 1900 and the department founded in 1902. He retired in 1926. He was a member of the Christadelphian church.
