It was released on 23 September 1991 in the UK by Creation Records, and 8 October 1991 in North America by Sire Records.Screamadelica peaked at #8 on the UK Albums Chart upon its initial release. The album was released to widespread critical acclaim, and is frequently acknowledged as one of the best albums of the 1990s. Screamadelica also won the first Mercury Music Prize in 1992.
