Heterosexual is the predominant mode for HIV/AIDS transmission in The Bahamas. As a result, the rate of HIV/AIDS continues to escalate among Bahamian women, while increasing the socioeconomic burden on the Bahamian society. It is imperative that we understand the factors that influence Bahamian women’s sexual behaviors, so that cultural appropriate and gender specific prevention interventions can be developed and implemented to decrease these women’s risks for HIV/AIDS. This book gives an overview of the state of HIV/AIDS globally, in the Caribbean and The Bahamas, particularly among women. More importantly, it shed light into how Bahamian women’s cultural upbringing may influence their sexual behaviors. Specifically, it explores factors such as self-esteem, self-silencing and self-efficacy related to urban Bahamian women’s sexual behaviors that may put them at risk for HIV/AIDS. The content of this book should be beneficial to anyone working within public and/or private healthcare systems, governmental and nongovernmental organizations and anyone who merely wants to learn more about a unique culture of women and their sexual behaviors.
