High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A shot glass is a small glass designed to hold or measure liquor, which is either drunk straight from the glass ("a shot") or poured into a mixed drink. "Jigger" and "pony" are earlier names for a container used to measure a standard quantity of liquor. Shot glasses decorated with a wide variety of humorous pictures, toasts, and advertising, are popular souvenirs and collectibles. Care must be taken when drinking from such glasses, as some of the decorations contain lead. In Italy, shot glasses have been used for over 200 years. They are typically used there for serving grappa. The grappa is sipped from the shot glass—not downed in a single gulp. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term "shot glass" first appeared in print in the 1940s. There are many stories about its origin, but none of them stands up to scrutiny. Either they place the origin decades before the term appeared in print, or they describe an item that had nothing to do with drinking liquor.
