Flood keyed Clayton's bass part off Mullen's playing of an Irish bodhran, which combined with overdubs, gave it a more unusual sound.Thematically, it deals with unrequited love, jealousy, obsession, and possessiveness."So Cruel" has only been performed live three times, each time in abbreviated acoustic form during the Zoo TV Tour.
