High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Gliding is a recreational activity and competitive air sport in which pilots fly unpowered aircraft known as gliders or sailplanes using naturally occurring currents of rising air in the atmosphere to remain airborne. The word soaring is also used for the sport. There are separate articles on the related sports of hang gliding and paragliding. When soaring conditions are good enough, experienced pilots can fly hundreds of kilometres before returning to their home airfields; occasionally flights of more than 1,000 kilometres are achieved. However, if the weather deteriorates, they may need to land elsewhere, but motorglider pilots can avoid this by starting an engine.
