As there has been no active U.S. Army Corps wetland delineator certification since 1997, SWS probably has the only nationally recognized certification program for wetland delineators and scientists. Wetland Professionals certified under this program are known as Professional Wetland Scientists (PWS), with Wetland Professionals in Training (WPIT) as an intermediary step. In only four states (Virginia, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, Minnosota) is there a state run wetland delineator certification.As the wetland profession grows, there may be more state-specific delineator programs if the U.S. Army Corps does not reinstate its certification. At this time there is no national requirement to be a PWS to delineate wetlands, but the PWS and/or state certifications may give the delineator an extra credential to win contracts. In addition, some organizations are offering a wetland delineation certificate program.
