Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Soga del Alma (Spanish for "the vine of the soul") is a church, legally registered in Peru, founded in June 2001 by Alan Shoemaker AKA "Alan Smith," a criminal fugitive from justice wanted for federal drug violations by the DEA. Soga de Alma founder Shoemaker was also jailed in Peru for trafficking ayahuasca as detailed in the Peruvian magazine Caretas. One of the church's stated aims is to formalize "the spiritual ceremonies that have been occurring in the Amazon for the last 100 years", in particular the use of the powerful entheogenic plant medicine Ayahuasca in healing ceremonies (although there is evidence that Ayahuasca has been used in such ways in the Amazon region for thousands of years, not merely 100).
