High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sonagachi is the largest red-light district in Kolkata, India and one of the largest in Asia. It is an area with several hundred multi-story brothels and some 10,000 sex workers. Sonagachi is located in North-Kolkata at 22°35 15 N 88°21 35 E / 22.5875°N 88.35972°E / 22.5875; 88.35972, near the intersection of Chittaranjan Avenue Shobha Bazar and Beadon Street, just north of the Marble Palace. A red-light district is a part of an urban area where there is a concentration of prostitution and sex-orientated businesses, such as sex shops, strip clubs, adult theaters, etc. The term originates from the red lights that were used as signs of brothels. The most well known red-light district is probably De Wallen in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The countries most often associated with red-light districts and prostitution are Netherlands and Thailand, but there are areas in many big cities around the world which have acquired international reputation as red-light districts, though usually without official recognition and often with official disapproval.
