It is based on Songs of a Dead Dreamer, the story collection by horror fiction writer Thomas Ligotti. The album was a critical success, though popular acceptance was lukewarm. Widely regarded as one of the first examples of illbient music, Songs of a Dead Dreamer was, at the time, a virtually-unique fusion of electronic music and hip hop. Paul D. Miller known by his stage name DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid (born in 1970), is a Washington DC-born electronic and experimental hip hop musician whose work is often called by critics as "illbient" or "trip hop". He is a turntablist, a producer, and an author. He borrowed his stage name from the character The Subliminal Kid in the novel Nova Express by William S. Burroughs. He is a Professor of Music Mediated Art at the European Graduate School.
