Sonya Clark (b. 1967, Washington, D.C.) is an American artist and chair of the Craft/Material Studies Department at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. Previously, she was Baldwin-Bascom Professor of Creative Arts at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Clark received degrees from Amherst College, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Cranbrook Academy of Art. She graduated from the Sidwell Friends School in 1985. She is known for expanding the definition of fiber art by exploring the use of combs and imagery of hair references and hairstyles in her work. She has exhibited artwork at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, NY and the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, MD among many other venues. Her Beaded Prayers Project has been exhibited in multiple venues including the Newark Museum and the Queens Library in Jamaica, NY. She has taught at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts on several occasions and served on the Board from 2000-2009. Clark is a recipient of many awards including a Pollock Krasner Award in 2006.
