Sonya's Story (Russian: История Сони) is an opera by the British composer Neal Thornton to a libretto based on the original Russian text of Russian playwrighter Anton Chekhov's play Uncle Vanya. Its sung libretto faithfully reproduces passages from Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, spoken text by Neal Thornton. The work is scheduled to premiere in London in August 2010 to celebrate Chekhov's 150th anniversary with a production directed by opera director / mezzo-soprano Sally Burgess, and designed by Charles Phu. Sonya's Story is an opera focusing on how Sonya reacts to events one tragic summer as the stresses of her life in late 19th century Russia. It is a musical psycho-drama giving an intimate and emotional picture of Sonya's responses to her life crises and the limitations presented by her social and personal circumstances.
