Sophia Di Martino (born 15 November 1983 in Attenborough, Nottinghamshire) is an English actress of Italian descent, known for portraying Polly Emmerson in Casualty and Gemma Pennant in The Royal Today. Di Martino made her television debut in an episode of Holby City. Her other television credits include Survivors, Spooks: Code 9, Heartbeat, Strictly Confidential and New Street Law. She also made a guest appearance in a special homeless episode of Casualty, starring opposite Pauline Quirke. In 2008 Di Martino played the role of student nurse and former pole dancer Gemma Pennant in The Royal Today. In 2009 she joined the regular cast of Casualty, playing ambulance technician Polly Emmerson. Di Martino gave up a Master's degree she had recently begun at the University of Manchester in order to take the part.
