Sophiatown in the 1950's was a suburb of Johannesburg South Africa that was similar to Harlem in that all races mixed in defiance of apartheid. Sophiatown was famous for jazz and black gangsters heavily influenced by American film who spoke a slang called Tsotsitaal. This era is revisited by some of the artists who lived there and they call back the past in two concerts. Sophiatown (pronounced with a long, stressed i) (also known as Sof'town or Kofifi) is a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sophiatown was established in 1904. Before 1913 black South Africans had freehold rights, and they bought properties in the suburb. By the 1920s whites had moved out, leaving behind a vibrant community of blacks, coloureds, Indians, and Chinese.
