Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Sophie Collier is an English artist working predominantly in film. She studied Fine Art at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford (BFA, 2002). Her films tell narrative fables or parables in which menace, social unrest, hope, ritual, relationships and ultimately humour take major roles. She uses playful drawing and sculptural construction to find the bones and muscles of a work. These drawings are then animated into story telling props using film and a cast of actors. She uses traditional cinematic and editorial devices to further punctuate the filmed scenes. Collier's painting The Black Swan Problem (2010) references a theory put forth by 18th Century Scottish philosopher David Hume, namely the Problem of Induction. In asking how many swans one need observe before inferring that all swans are white, he points to our tendency to create general rules based purely upon what is factually observed, since we cannot easily or immediately see what is happening elsewhere.
