Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. A few American publications for flute choir currently include a part for E (soprano) flute, an instrument pitched a minor third higher than the standard C flute and is rather rarely found at present. In these publications, an alternative part is provided either for the C Flute or for the piccolo. With the substitution of one of these more commonly found instruments, however the distinctive colour of a treble flute sound is missing. The Western concert flute or C flute (most flutes are tuned to the key of C) is a transverse (side-blown) woodwind instrument made of metal or wood. It is the most common variant of the flute. A musician who plays the flute is called a flautist, flutist, or flute player. The C flute is used in many ensembles including concert bands, orchestras, flute ensembles, and occasionally jazz bands and big bands. Other flutes in this family include the piccolo, alto flute, bass flute, contrabass flute and double contrabass flute.
