Following the mainstream commercial success of the Daddies' swing-based compilation Zoot Suit Riot, Soul Caddy marked a continuation of the multi-genre format as heard on the band's earlier studio albums, boasting a predominant influence from 1960s and 1970s rock music. Released after the decline of the swing revival's popularity and to an audience mostly unaware of the Daddies' rock-oriented side, Soul Caddy ultimately proved a commercial flop, leading the band to be dropped from Mojo and marking the beginning of their brief hiatus.
