Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Between 1914 and 1925 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed 119 Class 15A 4-8-2 steam locomotives in service, delivered in ten batches from three manufacturers. The predecessor Class 15 locomotives had one flaw, excessively long firetubes. When more were ordered, SAR chief mechanical engineer D.A. Hendrie improved the boiler by adding a combustion chamber and shortening the distance between tube plates from 21 ft 9 in (6.629 m) to 19 ft (5.791 m) in the process. These locomotives became the Class 15A and were built in ten batches by three manufacturers; 68 in seven orders from North British, 30 in two orders from Beyer, Peacock and the last 21 from Maffei.
