In 1918 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed ten Class 15B 4-8-2 steam locomotives in service. Another twenty were ordered and delivered in 1922. Wartime disruption in Europe led to the first batch of ten South African Class 15B 4-8-2 steam locomotives being ordered from the Montreal Locomotive Works in Canada in 1918. A second batch of twenty was ordered and delivered in 1922. They were built to the general specifications of the Class 15, but with bar frames and some typical North American features. They were fitted with a combustion chamber to the firebox.
