The South African Class 15E 50 kV AC electric locomotive entered service in mid 2010 and work exclusively on the 50 kV AC Sishen-Saldanha iron ore line. The Class 15E is the product of a joint venture by Mitsui (design), Toshiba (electrical), the UCW Partnership (bodies) and the RSD division of DCD-Dorbyl (bogies and drawgear). It was locally manufactured by the UCW Partnership in Nigel, Gauteng. Class 15E locomotives are used on the 861 kilometres (535 miles) Sishen-Saldanha iron ore line to haul export ore from the open cast iron mines at Sishen in the Northern Cape to the harbour at Saldanha in the Western Cape.
