Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. In 1917 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed ten Class 16B 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives in passenger train service. The South African Class 16B 4-6-2 locomotive was designed by D.A. Hendrie, chief mechanical engineer of the SAR at the time, and built by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Scotland. They were identical to predecessors Class 16 and successors Class 16C in most respects, except that they had wider cabs than the Class 16 while the Class 16C had a combustion chamber fitted to the boiler.
