Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Between 1978 and 1979 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed 100 Class 7E locomotives in service. They were the first 25kV AC locomotives to see service on South African rails. The South African Class 7E 25kV AC electric locomotive was designed by the 50 c/s Group (ACEC, AEG-Telefunken, Alsthom, Brown Boveri, Siemens and Societe MTE) and built by Union Carriage and Wagon (UCW) in Nigel, Transvaal. UCW did not allocate builder's numbers to the locomotives it built for the South African Railways. While the practice by most other locomotive builders was to allocate builder's numbers or works numbers to record the locomotives built by them, UCW simply used the SAR road numbers for their record keeping.
