Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Between 1980 and 1981 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed 50 Class 7E1 locomotives in service. The South African Class 7E1 25kV AC electric locomotive was designed by Hitachi and built by Dorbyl in South Africa. Like Union Carriage and Wagon, Dorbyl did not allocate builder's numbers to the locomotives it built for the South African Railways. While the practice by most other locomotive builders was to allocate builder's numbers or works numbers to record the locomotives built by them, Dorbyl simply used the SAR road numbers for their record keeping.
