In 1982 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed 25 Class 7E2, Series 1 locomotives in service. The South African Class 7E2 Series 1 25kV AC electric locomotive was designed by the 50 c/s Group (ACEC, AEG-Telefunken, Alsthom, Brown Boveri, Siemens and Societe MTE) and built by Union Carriage and Wagon (UCW) in Nigel, Transvaal. Union Carriage and Wagon did not allocate builder's numbers to the locomotives it built for the South African Railways. While the practice by most other locomotive builders was to allocate builder's numbers or works numbers to record the locomotives built by them, UCW simply used the SAR road numbers for their record keeping.
