Between September and December 1973 the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed twenty Class 91-000 diesel-electric locomotives in service on its 610 mm (2 ft) narrow gauge lines, the Langkloof apple line between Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape and Avontuur, Western Cape and the Alfred County line from Port Shepstone to Harding, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The South African Class 91-000 type GE UM6B diesel-electric locomotive was designed and built by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania, and imported. It was designed for 2 ft (610 mm) gauge (Cape narrow gauge) and is the largest 2 ft gauge diesel-electric locomotive in the world, weighing in at 44,000 kg (43 long tons) average.
