The South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), placed a total of 24 Class ES locomotives in service, spread over four orders between 1936 and 1964. South Africa's first electric shunter locomotives, the South African Class ES, entered service in 1936. Designed by Metropolitan-Vickers, the first two and last two were rebuilt from Class 1E locomotives by the South African Railways at its Pietermaritzburg shops, while the Series 2 and 3 locomotives were built by Metropolitan-Vickers. A total of 24 Class ES locomotives were delivered between 1936 and 1964.
