Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. In 1902, towards the end of the Second Anglo-Boer War, the Imperial Military Railway placed 35 4-10-2T tank locomotives in service, built to the specifications of the Natal Government Railways “Reid tenwheeler”. At the end of the war, these locomotives were transferred to the Central South African Railways as CSAR Class E 4-10-2T. The CSAR converted six of them to 4-8-2T tank engines by removing the fifth set of coupled wheels and these became the Class H1 in 1912 with the creation of the South African Railways (SAR), later renamed Spoornet and then Transnet Freight Rail (TFR).
