Older adults constitute a fast-growing cohort in China nowadays. They are also active participants in civic activities in society. Social capital is considered a value of resource and benefits that an individual accumulates and accesses through his embedded relationship with other actors. Its key elements of networks, trust, and norms bear strong implications on the quality of life in old age. However, so far there has been lack of systematic study on these social capital ingredients as indicators in the Chinese context. In addition, studies among different Chinese populations, especially the older generation, are insufficient.
