The previous stability that existed in many organizations has been replaced by rapid change that continues to accelerate. Changes in government regulations, technology, competition, and the economy drive organizations to downsize in order to reduce costs. Downsizing is a major strategy that results in people being laid-off, fired, or forced to retire. While the corporate response to external changes in its environment has been to downsize, it is not clearly understood how the employees of these corporations are responding to downsizing. Survivors of downsizing are aware of the constant threat of job loss and in some cases may be more stressed than the victims. Employees in this downsizing corporate world feel “under siege” and engage in defensive behavior that is counter-productive. While downsizing poses a threat to employees, it also presents a learning opportunity. Little has been written about what employees are learning about how to manage the changes resulting from the proliferation of corporate-wide downsizing. This book uncovers what people learned from their downsizing experience and how they learned to manage their careers successfully after organizational downsizing.
