The main house was built 1794-1799 by Richard Bland Lee, Northern Virginia`s first Representative to Congress first elected in 1789, as well as a brother of Henry `Light Horse Harry` Lee III and of Charles Lee, Attorney General of the United States under both George Washington and John Adams. He is also an uncle of Robert E. Lee.
