This book is based on a Bachelor’s thesis in Urban and Regional Planning. It describes a study in which a western approach, namely strategic planning, is used in the assessment of the need for (re)development of an informal settlement in Petare Norte, Caracas, Venezuela. This planning approach is examined for its usefulness in a development context. The aim of the study was to develop a standardized methodology , a toolbox, which promotes the sustainable (re)development of a specific informal settlement, and is at the same time a methodology that can be used in informal settlements irrespective of where they are in the world. This book is relevant for stakeholder groups and individuals such as residents, politicians, municipalities, civic groups as well as planners who wish to broaden their perspectives on planning issues surrounding informal settlements. The intrinsic motivation for this study lies in the author’s upbringing and life experiences in lesser developed countries.
