High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! A teleprinter (teletypewriter, Teletype or TTY for TeleTYpe/TeleTYpewriter) is a now largely obsolete electromechanical typewriter which can be used to communicate typed messages from point to point and point to multipoint over a variety of communications channels that range from a simple electrical connection, such as a pair of wires, to the use of radio and microwave as the transmission medium. The modern descendants of these devices are fully electronic and use a computer monitor instead of a printer. Usually called TDDs (Telecommunications Devices for the Deaf), such devices are still used by the hearing impaired for typed communications over ordinary telephone lines. Sometimes, these devices are referred to as TTYs but this creates an ambiguity because TTY can also refer to teleprinters in general.
