He is played by David Tennant, who appears in three series as well as eight specials. As with previous incarnations of the Doctor, the character has also appeared in other Doctor Who multimedia. Tennant is the second Scottish actor to play the role; the first being Sylvester McCoy, who played the Seventh Doctor between 1987 and 1989, and for the brief revival in 1996.
