In abstract algebra, a tessarine is an element of a four-real- dimensional algebra introduced by James Cockle in 1848. The concept includes both ordinary complex numbers and split-complex numbers. A tessarine t may be described as a 2 x 2 matrixThe particular tessarine has the property that its matrix product square is the identity matrix I. This property led Cockle to call the tessarine jmath a "new imaginary in algebra". The term reduced biquaternion has been used for a tessarine (see Pei (2004)) in connection with digital signal processing; further work in this area by Alfsmann has restored the tessarine label. The term "tessarine" is archaic and no longer used much, as the algebra of tessarines is isomorphic to the sum of two copies of the complex numbers.
