The book analyses the role of logistics in macro- economics and concludes that logistics is poorly positioned in this milieu. This is a result of a shortage of management information and the reasons for this are explained. A modeling system is proposed and applied for the South African economy which measures all freight flows on a commodity and modal level and forecasts future demand. The system's internal and external reliability is tested and the work is contextualized with the future drivers of freight transport demand management such as environmental concerns.
