The Pacific island literature has been in constant attention since one or two centuries. However, before the 20th century, everything written about the pacific islands has been mostly made from a non-pacific point of view. This has made the islands kind of exotic and unimportant from the point of view of westerners. Nevertheless, native “island” writers like Derek Walcott and Denis Scott have come to the forefront to give an “insider's” view of their native islands. This has somehow changed the way of thinking or viewing that the non-islander had on the pacific islands. Derek Walcott, who is a native of Saint-Lucia, is a poet of mixed blood- he has both African and European blood. This is a reason why Walcott is a representative of the ambivalent feelings of the islanders who are descendants of mixed bloods. This is what has pushed me towards doing a research on the struggle which the islanders lead due to their mixed identities. I want to show how the islanders feel at being part of the suffering of the African slaves and of the pride of being part of the same blood and power of the great British Empire.
