While many have observed, almost in passing, that Metastasio's libretti are somewhat propagandist in support of Emperor Charles VI, there is a lacuna in the research that attempts to prove the point and explain exactly how. This book addresses the role of Metastasio's libretti in eighteenth-century literary and aristocratic society. The purpose of this book is to illustrate how Metastasio intentionally alluded to specific contemporary political events relevant to Charles VI in his libretto "La clemenza di Tito" in order to gain favor with the emperor and subtly influence public opinion in support of his patron through his musical drama. This book is a valuable resource for stage directors, opera lovers, and anyone interested in Metastasio's poetry and its veiled meaning in the context of eighteenth-century European politics.
