School counseling profession is challenged to define and enunciate its roles and functions more clearly. In the 21st century, school counselors will probably be more effective if they are able to provide proactive programs that meet and enhance developmental needs, as well as to react to demands for interventions when required. They will be challenged to meet the needs of individuals having different worldviews, as well as of those sharing the same worldviews. To meet the above challenges, professional counselors have to be informed and able to establish relationships with individuals in all cultural groups, be able to conceptualize client concerns from their perspective or worldview, and provide proactive programming that is culturally sensitive This study is to identify the perceptions of students, teachers, and counselors toward the role of public secondary school counselors in the Province of East Java, Indonesia. More specifically, the study deals with the perceptions of students, teachers, and counselors on how important the role of school counselors and how often school counselors perform their functions.
