High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The X Factor is a British television music competition to find new singing talent. It has been broadcast annually since 2004 and its eighth series was completed in December 2011. The winners and finalists of the series have seen varied levels of success with musical releases. Steve Brookstein, the winner of series 1, reached number one in January 2005 with his debut (and so far only) single, a cover of the Phil Collins song "Against All Odds". It entered the singles chart at number two on Boxing Day in 2004, behind "Do They Know It`s Christmas?" by Band Aid 20, missing out on the Christmas number one in the UK as it was released the day after that accolade had been announced.Shayne Ward, Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson and Alexandra Burke, the winners of the subsequent shows, have all reached the top spot at Christmas with their debut singles. Series six winner, Joe McElderry was beaten to the top stop by a Facebook campaigning, but reached number one the following week, he later became the first contestant in the history of the show to release 4 albums. The winner of the seventh series Matt Cardle had his debut single at UK #1 spot in December 2010 over Christmas, while series 8 winners Little Mix had their debut single at UK #1 spot as well but failed to remain top over Christmas. In case of the latter, the reason of it lies in the releasing their winning single a week prior to Christmas in order to avoid the Christmas battle with the non-The X Factor singles.
