Saint AEthelwold of Winchester (also spelled Aethelwald, Ethelwold, etc) (909–984) was a 10th century English Bishop of Winchester and leader of the monastic reform movement in Anglo-Saxon England. AEthelwold was born in Winchester of good parentage in about 909. After a youth spent at the court of King Athelstan, AEthelwold placed himself under AElfheah the Bald, Bishop of Winchester, who gave him the tonsure and ordained him priest along with Saint Dunstan. AEthelwold became a monk at Glastonbury Abbey, where he was dean during Dunstan's abbacy, until about 955 when he was appointed Abbot of Abingdon. The nine years he spent in Abingdon were extremely productive, and he undertook the building of a church, the rebuilding of the cloister and the establishment at Abingdon of the Benedictine Rule. The future King Edgar was taught from boyhood by AEthelwold, and evidently inspired his pupil to take an interest in the rule of Saint Benedict. When Edgar's brother, King Eadwig, died in 959, AEthelwold backed Edgar's succession.
